Amy Schumer is set to make her Broadway debut, starring in comedy veteran Steve Martin’s new play, Meteor Shower. The play tells the story of two married couples who get together for an evening of stargazing and sparring in a backyard in 1993.

The show has run previously in San Diego and New Haven, but Amy Schumer and fellow comic Keegan-Michael Key provide more star power for a Broadway run.

Steve Martin told the Times: “I can’t tell you how excited I am, I’ve been working on this for over 20 years—I wrote it in the ’90s, when it is set, but I didn’t finish it, I got distracted, and then it came back to me a couple of years ago.”

Before the new leads were announced reviews of Meteor Shower had been…iffy. However director Jerry Zaks says they have made improvements for Broadway: “We’ve made adjustments, we’ve made cuts, he’s rewritten—we’ve just begun the process of trying to get the script to be everything it can be…Watching people connect, or struggle to connect, is the greatest spectator sport imaginable.”
Steve Martin went to some lengths to cast Amy in the play, who has already acted in another of his plays Picasso at the Lapin Agile, offering her the part at a house party. Amy tweeted: “I am more thrilled than thrilled about this announcement. Thank you, Amy, Keegan-Michael, Laura, and Alan. An impeccable cast.”
Meteor Showers will begin previews in November.
