One of our favourite cake experts and comedians Sue Perkins will be travelling up The Ganges for a new travelogue on BBC One which will air int he new year. Sue will follow the sacred source of the river in the Himalayas down through to the heartlands of India before heading to the Bay of Bengal.
Sue commented on her journey: “I’ve travelled the length of the Ganges, from the oxygen-starved peaks of the Himalayas to the vast delta in West Bengal, meeting a huge array of characters on the way. Expect cows on bridges, India’s Most Energetic Monk, and me, in a dress. I can’t wait for you to see it.”
Sue will meet pilgrims seeking to wash clean their sins, work alongside fishermen and farmers who share their forests with man-eating tigers and meet with a few of the thousands of young women leaving their rural villages for the cities looking for work and freedom.
Clare Sillery, head of commissioning for BBC documentaries said: “The Ganges tells the story of modern India in one spectacular river journey. With Sue Perkins’s wit, warmth and intelligence it’s hard to imagine a better travelling companion.”
Sue has covered her South-East Asian travels before, documenting her journey down the Mekong for BBC 2 in 2014 and Kolkata last year for BBC One. There was also her hair-raising and hilarious journey with Liza Tarbuck driving down the Ho Chi Minh Trail in Vietnam and Laos for The World’s Most Dangerous Roads series.
