Crazyhead by Howard Overman (creator of Misfits) is a genuinely dark comedy horror with jump out or your skin moments and laugh out loud humour. At the centre of Crazyhead is the unlikely friendship of two twenty-something women Amy (Cara Theobald) and Raquel (Susan Wokoma) who are perceived to have minor mental health issues – they see demons, but these demons are real, and can possess anyone. Amy and Raquel are seers, and the demons are on to them.

With an opening sequence which is action packed, high in tension and comedy, their friendship is cemented with an exorcism setting the tone for a powerful female friendship, and it is their job to hunt the demons down.

It is refreshing to have such real female characters in the leads. Amy works in a bowling alley and Raquel is a lonely outsider with questionable social skills. This partnership is made for these flawed heroes, as they fight off the possessed and kick ass.

At the heart of this series is the universal appeal of possession and exorcism, something which Overman feels is deeply rooted in our psyche. Comparisons with Buffy are inevitable, but this is now and it is undoubtedly going to achieve cult status once it is released on Netflix.

Crazyhead can be seen on E4 19th October at 9pm. Don’t miss it!
