Seven years ago Tiff Stevenson started doing stand up and a lot has changed since then…or has it? Tiffany’s life certainly has, considering her earlier shows focused on more personal issues, Seven features an anecdote that includes travel, hotels and celebrity name dropping.
What’s not changed is Tiff’s trademark style – never shying away from political subjects and feminist issues no matter how much they might make her audience nervous. It’s rare a comedian recognises it’s more important that these topics are questioned rather than an easy laugh is won. The refrain “It’s 2016!” regularly punctuates her verbal flow, whether talking about a strip club boasting of its barely legal girls, the place for unwed, childfree women in society or why it’s not unfeminist to dislike Theresa May.
This is not to say Seven isn’t a funny show; it is. But occasionally you can feel the audience’s anxiety that this might be the subject that can’t be brought round to a punch line. Rest assured, there is always a punch line here.
