Back by popular demand (yes) we are schooling the Edinburgh Festival Fringe once again as part of the Fringe Central events programme for participants with our Weekend Comedy Academy.
Whatever your comedy needs we can (probably) meet them. We have workshops on stand up, panel show one-liners, sketch character, sitcom writing, satire and improvisation – all for free, we aren’t making this up!
Saturday 13th August
10:30am If you’re Feeling a Little Sketchy then come to our comedy character workshop. Creating characters and sketches are the perfect introduction to writing and performing live comedy. This workshop will help you find your comic voice with sketch techniques to develop comical plots and characters.
1:30pm We will be discussing Comedy in Reality Television and its hunger for pithy one-liners and amusing anecdotes. From unwitting members of the public to celebrities, the participants are more memorable if they are funny, consciously or not. Join Funny Women and special guests for a discussion on how hilarious reality TV is taking over the world.
4:00pm Think you have a sitcom in you? We’ll be holding our How to Write a Sitcom and Get Yourself Noticed workshop to help you generate ideas, formulate joke structure and bring comic themes and characters to life. If you are suffering from writer’s block, need an outside eye or are trying to get your work in front of the right people, come along to get some valuable insights and advice.
Sunday 14th August
12:00pm Stand Up to Stand Out: How to Find Your Funny is our flagship workshop. Humour is essential in our everyday lives and defines our humanity. As the leading community in female comedy, Funny Women runs many workshops to help people to perform, write and do business with humour. This is a valuable introduction, for men and women, to the basics of stand-up comedy with a few tricks of the trade thrown in to help develop your comic voice.
2.30pm You Couldn’t Make It Up: How to Improvise The UK has a thriving impro scene, so join in and learn some core improvisation skills such as comic timing, to say ‘yes, and…’, to develop characters and storylines, and how to listen. Learning how to live in the moment and think on your feet is as valuable in everyday life as it is for performing on stage.
4:30pm Politics and Satire Politicians may beg to differ but satire is good for politics, engaging the public and poking fun. In a world gone a bit mad where Donald Trump could be leader of the free world, satire may be the only way to make sense of things! Join Funny Women and a panel of political movers and shakers to discuss comedy and politics.
Please note that while all Fringe Central events are free there is a small booking fee of 90p per ticket (up to a maximum of £5.40) which applies to telephone, online and mobile app bookings.
