This Thursday Isy Suttie will be joined by Funny Women Awards alumni Gemma Whelan and Miss London Hughes in the BBC’s Comedy Classroom to school secondary school students on how to write comedy in a live lesson. Isy and Gemma are special guests and London will be presenting the show.
The Comedy Classroom was launched last month in collaboration with BBC Learning, BBC Comedy and the National Literacy Trust to give 13-15 year olds across the UK a chance to have their work made and broadcast by the BBC this autumn. The winning entrant will get to visit the BBC to see their creation be filmed as well as a Comedy Classroom trophy, a signed certificate and a visit from a comedian to their school. The categories are Class Joker, for stand ups, Class Act for sketch comedy and Class Comic for clever captions.
BBC Comedy Controller Shane Allen, said: “While this competition might uncover the next generation of brilliant comedy writers and performers the main aim is for everyone taking part to have fun and learn about some of the techniques that make great comedy. There is a great sense of original thinking and authorship in creating comedy as it often involves playing with language, concepts and a degree of lateral thinking. Lots of big name comedy talent are really engaged in this and promoting the joy of learning through laughter.”
We’re looking forward to seeing what the comedy youth come up with, we also reckon we could all learn a thing or two from Isy, Gemma and Miss London, so tune in this Thursday.
