2016 is a Leap Year. Which is pleasing, in a novel manner, but only really of significance to those born on the 29th February or any ladies who wish to propose to their boyfriend.
In case any lady readers out there are planning on taking that leap (ha-ha) Beefeater have decided to assist them. While the common male stereotype is that of the commitmentphobe, according to a Beefeater poll 59% of men say they would love their girlfriends to propose. Although they didn’t say whether they’d accept. Still, it’s nice to be asked, isn’t it?
Beefeater research shows that when it comes to proposals men rank the method and location of the proposal as more important than the engagement ring. Which isn’t too surprising seeing as it’s not something he’s proposing (again, ha-ha) to wear forever.
20% of women said they would like to propose to their partner, but 28% would be worried about their partner’s reaction. However, thanks to all this research Beefeater has come up with a solution for those boyfriends who like to be wined and dined at a reasonable price with a kids menu option available.
Sarah Tinsley, Head of Marketing at Beefeater, said: “we wanted to help women across the country take their engagement into their own hands and ensure a successful proposal. The Beefeater ‘Leap Year Proposal Package’ has been tailored for men, especially those who like their food, with an edible ring, crisp confetti and of course a branded steak that does the job of popping the question! We hope to see a few newly engaged couples on 29th February and are looking forward to celebrating with them.”
Were this an all genders, all year package I’d think this was a great idea! I’d have liked my husband’s proposal to have involved an edible ring! (There was no ring, apparently he uhmed and ahhed over Hula Hoops and Haribo and unwisely went with neither) In fact I’d be saying why stop there? Why not have Happy Graduation! or ‘I’m pregnant!’ or ‘Have you been missold PPI?’ branded into your steak?
But what really pisses me off is the idea that women have to wait for permission. Not just any permission. the permission of a calendar. Eff that noise. It isn’t a crime to be a woman and to want to get married yet it’s seen as a risky and peculiar thing to propose if you’re a woman in a hetero relationship. You want to get married so badly, you ask. Tomorrow or on the 29th. Geez.
