This summer I performed my second solo show, Gumption, at the Edinburgh Festival. It was my seventh visit to the Fringe as a performer but for me it felt like a debut, an unveiling of the new me. Not in an ‘I lost five stone and can now go through a revolving door without turning sideways and I can go into River Island and not just look at the earrings’ kind of way.
The changes I have made extend beyond my waistline. What I actually needed to do to improve my life was very simple. After years of various forms of therapy all I had to do was have a spring clean! Before you reach for the Lemon Pledge and Wondermop(tm) I will explain. I had a little clear out of some of the more negative things and people that I surrounded myself with. A friend flush, if you will, a (fr)enemy enema, a colleague colonic.
My love of films inspired me to think of myself as the star actor in my own life instead of a bit player in somebody else’s. I decided to finally grab a bit of the gumption that all great leading ladies have and, quite frankly, sort it out! Of course every film has various subplots and twists and turns in the pursuit of the happy ending and my show chronicles the sometimes hilarious and ridiculous mishaps I have encountered in the past 12 months.
I hope you will come and join me for an hour of true tales, warmth and big belly laughs. Bring a friend and leave your frenemies at home!
