Two Bristol girls are embarking on a short comedy film bonanza with backing from Creative England, BFI.Network and Creative Skillset in a bid to stand up for women in comedy.
Inspired by actual reports of several talented comediennes being turned down for comedy gigs due to the fact that they already had a female on the list, the short film is called Stages and written by funny woman Ellen Waddell and produced by Emma Hanson.
Stages is currently in production as part of Creative England’s iShorts scheme. The film follows Gwen, an outspoken female comedian who must behave appropriately during a fancy dinner with her boyfriend and his boss in the hope of gaining him a promotion. However, the night doesn’t go to plan as Gwen has just been diagnosed with a rather itchy case of thrush! We flick between the restaurant and Gwen at a stand up show a few nights later where she provides scathingly witty commentary on the increasingly disastrous dinner.
Staring writer, actress and comedienne Danielle Ward, the team plan to shoot in Bristol in July and aim to hit film festivals and short film showcases shortly after to prove that women are capable of more than laughing at salad and eating yoghurt. The pair are hoping to raise a small budget to help them achieve this through a crowd funding campaign.
