Proposals for the troubled BBC Three channel have just been announced. The channel is to be taken off digital terrestrial, making room for a BBC One+1 service, however this is not the end for BBC Three as it will live on online as a 24 hour channel.
Damian Kavanagh, who is leading the proposals, compared the new channel to Netflix, saying BBC Three would be "reinvented for the digital age…This is not moving a TV channel and putting it online. This is new. We are the first broadcaster in the world to propose something like this".
However fans of 'Snog Marry Avoid' and 'Don't Tell the Bride' will not be able to breathe a sigh of relief as these shows are likely to be cut in favour of harder hitting content. Though we don't know quite what is more hard hitting than watching a weeping girl remove her make up at the behest of a computer.
Traditional genres like drama and comedy will be replaced by the strands 'Make Me Think' and – one we will certainly be watching – 'Make Me Laugh'. A daily news service will be added in conjuction with Radio One's Newsbeat and unlike other BBC shows BBC Three programmes will be available on iPlayer, YouTube and Facebook.
Director general Tony Hall called it an "exciting and ambitious proposal" though it has yet to be approved by the BBC Trust.
