Money is something a lot of us find difficult to deal with regardless of gender. As fast as we earn it, we spend it, and saving money is not deep rooted in today’s fast moving consumer society. Wealth is another whole ball game entirely and means different things to different people.
So we were pleased to come across this quirky book with its retro vintage cover which offers women who are insecure about managing their finances a guide to achieving some peace of mind and security. The by-line for Mary Waring’s new book, The Wealthy Woman, is ‘A Man is not a Financial Plan’ and, we suspect quite a few women have found this out the hard way! A good match is no longer a guarantee of a life free of money worries.
As a chartered accountant who specialises in financial advice for women going through divorce, Mary asks if we are confident about our finances and if wealth in all its facets is important to us. She promises to guide us with a series of small steps which will transform our attitude to money and managing our affairs, the financial kind that is, not the romantic! Although that would make a great sequel…
Mary helpfully outlines the chapters before you embark on the journey and there are some exercises at the end of each chapter that will help you put some of the advice into practise. It’s a user friendly format too with headings that make you want to read on rather than fall asleep over them – ‘Don’t be an ostrich’, ‘Till debt us do part’ and the final triumphant ‘New You’ chapter which will propel you through subject matter that many of us would normally eschew in favour of a good novel or updating Facebook.
This is a good solid advice book for women who want to be financially independent written in an accessible and open style – Mary has successfully mined her experience of dealing with women and divorce to produce a helpful ‘back to basics’ guide.
It’s not an obvious choice for the Christmas stocking but the gift of financial security will have a lasting effect for many festive seasons to come. Available from Amazon at £12.99 for the book or £5.75 for the Kindle version now.
