Here at Funny Women HQ, we’re tremendously excited to see the return of Edinburgh sell-out hit Death Ship 666, which sails into the Jermyn Street Theatre this week for a very limited season. This epic Titanic parody received a heap of five-star reviews up in Edinburgh – and as well as a stellar cast and talented production team, it also features two of our Funny Women Awards alumni!
A motley crew of passengers boards the Death Ship to set sail for the Bermuda Triangle. Amongst them is our heroine, Grandma, who falls in love with the ship's dashing Architect – but as she does so, a string of sinister plots conspire to destroy Death Ship and her passengers. In the fight for survival it's woman vs child, human vs bear and ship vs time. With a small team actors sharpening their dramatic skills to play a vast cast of different characters, it’s no surprise that this show has been compared to West End smash hit, The 39 Steps.
Box Step Productions, the team behind the show, are perhaps best known for their viral comedy parodies – with a quarter of a million views, shorts like Fellowship of the Ringwraiths and Star Wars Disney Musical have landed them in the worthy attention of comedy fans everywhere. The trio – made up of Paul Clarkson, Michael Patrick Clarkson and Gemma Hurley – have recently made the lineup for the Film 4 Scene Stealer Awards for their short film First Day. Unbelievably, despite their success, this is their first foray into live theatre comedy writing.
Rachel Parris (runner up of both the Funny Women Awards 2010 and the Musical Comedy Awards) plays Grandma. She’s joined by another FW Awards alumni Anna Morris, who has also recently filmed the lead role in a comedy pilot for ITV2. Fellow comics Carrie Marx, Mattias Penman, Andrew Utley and writer Michael Patrick Clarkson round up the cast of six, who play over thirty (yes, thirty!) characters. Phew!
With the show making the ‘Best of the Fringe’ list in both the Daily Express and the British Comedy Guide this summer, this definitely isn’t one to miss. If that doesn’t sell it, it’s tagline – Airplane meets Titanic – certainly should! Still unsure? We’ll be reviewing Death Ship 666 on the Funny Women website – so check out our full report…
