One of our favourite women on the comedy acting scene, Helen Lederer has today been presented with a Doctor of Letters in recognition of her outstanding professional achievements and continued involvement with the University of Hertfordshire.
Since graduating from the University of Hertfordshire in 1978 with a BA in Applied Social Studies Helen has built up a career in television, radio and on stage. Helen has appeared on our TV screens in many popular shows such as 'Girls on Top', 'Bottom' and, perhaps most famously, as ditzy journalist Catriona in 'Absolutely Fabulous'.
The ceremony was held in the Cathedral and Abbey Church of St Albans, where alongside Helen, 4,400 new graduates were also celebrating academic achievements. On receiving her Award Helen commented: “It is a real honour to be invited here in the midst of so much achievement. I am very grateful and in awe.”
While not all of the characters Helen has played might be held up as shining examples for new graduates, Helen herself, with her work as a writer, broadcaster, presenter and after-dinner speaker, often in support of a wide range of charities, makes her a great role model for today's University of Hertfordshire graduates. Judy Glasman, Dean of the School of Creative Arts at the University said: "We encourage all our graduates to set high standards, to be creative and to make a positive contribution to society. Helen embodies all these qualities and we are tremendously proud of her.”
