Huge congratulations to 2012 Funny Women Awards finalist Sofie Hagen who won the 2013 Laughing Horse New Act of the Year competition. Beating a 13 strong final line-up in London on Sunday night, Sofie was the only woman finalist, and impressed the judges with her material, timing and confidence.
The Danish stand-up was one of over 1000 hopefuls who entered the Laughing Horse heats across the country, hoping to find the success that past winners Russell Kane, Nina Conti and Jack Whitehall have enjoyed.
Sofie was the first act to be selected to go through to our 10th Anniversary Funny Women Awards final last year. We loved her dead-pan style with her Danish take on life making for highly original material.
In fact, we loved her so much we invited her to take part in our International Women's Day Eve 10 Nations Charity Gala to represent Denmark among the 10 Nations where she told self deprecating anecdotes about her size, dating and the phrase “chubby chasing,” all delivered with such a cheerful smile that we felt very uplifted by Sofie, despite some of the edginess of her material.
After winning on Sunday Sofie said: “I'm absolutely thrilled and excited about having won. It was such an honour being amongst the 12 other acts, who were all superb…”
