The long running and prestigious comedy competition New Act of The Year has announced the acts who will go through to compete in the final on Sunday 27th January 2013. We're delighted that five women have got through and note that this particular competition always has a healthy gender balance, even-ing out year on year.
Formally know as the 'Hackney Empire New Act of the Year' (now known colloquially as The NATYS) the competition left its Hackney venue in 2011, and next year's final will take place at The Bloomsbury Theatre.
The five women going through are the fabulous Lindsay Sharman (Funny Women Awards finalist 2011) with her comedy beat poetry, the hilariously gorgeous Glaswegian, Anna Devitt, who wowed the audience at our Funny Women Awards Scottish heat and Manchester semi-finals earlier this year, the young and talented Fern Brady, The Funny Side regular compere Nicky Wilkinson and accomplished and award winning Sam Savage.
Good luck to all three of them and we'd like to make a very special mention for Four Screws Loose, who are also through to the final! Yes, we know they're male but we had the pleasure of performing in the same venue, the Bosco Tent, as them during the Edinburgh Fringe this year. It's got nothing to do with sharing a dressing room with them, honest! We loved their show too so may the best act win!
