BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour has hit the headlines recently as they prepare the Women’s Power List of the 100 most powerful women in Britain today. We were heartened to hear that judge Dawn O’Porter wants many of the women on the list to be those who use humour and feel powerful by making other people laugh.
Viv Groskop, finalist in the 2012 Funny Women Awards, was interviewed by Dawn O’Porter on Woman’s Hour this morning, and made some brilliant observations about the work of women in comedy that takes place behind the scenes. Do comedy performers really have all the power? Don’t commissioners, promoters and agents hold a great deal of sway in championing comedy talent, both male and female?
Viv’s veritable roll-call of the brightest and best of performers, commissioners, writers, promoters, agents and managers was great food for thought. It got us thinking about the women that many of those outside of the comedy industry may never have heard of but are shaping the comedy of the future.
We want to hear from YOU as we are putting together a Funny Women Comedy Power List as a complement to the Woman's Hour Power List. Who do you think should be on the Funny Women Comedy Power List? Tweet us @funnywomen to let us know what you think, or leave your comments below!
