Sunday 21 October Leicester Square Theatre
First came the Georgina videos introducing us to Britain’s worst bride. The videos went viral overnight gaining 50,000 views in the first month. Then came the talk of 'Dolly Mixture'.
'Georgina' is one of the characters in Dolly Mixture, the debut solo show from talented comic actor Anna Morris. The show was a sell-out at the Camden Fringe and Edinburgh Fringe. During my time in Edinburgh I wasn’t able to see the show so I was delighted when it was announced that Dolly Mixture was coming back to London for two nights only.
Packed into the Lounge at Leicester Square Theatre, the audience sat eagerly anticipating what was coming as Katy Perry blared out over the speakers. Then suddenly the door swings open and in struts Anna wearing a black dress accompanied by big black sunglasses.
Anna transforms herself throughout the show into five main characters each with a pink trademark prop and unique accent. Without warning the audience becomes part of the show and is transported into the Dolly Mixture world with no choice but to obey the demands put upon us. (And believe me when I tell you, there are demands!)
I am keen to see 'Georgina' the bride and when she ‘arrives’ we are all transported to the wedding reception. The best man, cake maker, and staff are all in attendance but all is not what it seems.
The show is intertwined with adverts which cleverly mock the modern day beauty industry. It is refreshing to see that nearly all of the characters are strong and darkly comic women, a world away from the usual female character stereotypes.
If you see the show be prepared to be constantly surprised at the twists and turns. At the end of the night I had great respect for the high energy maintained throughout the show and was inspired to have seen such original ideas.
'Dolly Mixture' is next appearing at The Hen & Chickens, Islington on Monday 29 October 2012. For more information about Anna Morris click HERE.
