Staying for the entirety of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe can leave you with a disillusioned idea of reality. As the festival comes to a close, the realisation that you will have to return to said reality suddenly hits you, cueing the juxtaposition of dread and homesickness to settle into your stomach.

However, as preparations for the end of the Fringe have begun, lest we forget the celebrations that take place at this time every year! Last night the wonderful Aisling Bea, who appeared in one of our Funny Women at the Fringe showcases this year, has won So You Think You’re Funny 2012 which is hosted by the Gilded Balloon every year. Funny Women is delighted to congratulate Aisling on her fantastic achievement!!

With Aisling’s spectacular win, it seems that female comedy really is ruling the Fringe this year and bodes well for the coming year and how it can influence the rest of the world of comedy. Both Claudia O’Doherty and Josie Long have been shortlisted for the Foster’s Edinburgh Comedy Award (formerly known as the Perrier Award). Their appearance on the shortlist means that it is only the second time that two female solo comedy acts have gotten this far in the competition!

These brilliant achievements by some of the brightest talent in female comedy holds a special precedence for Funny Women as it prefaces the Funny Women Awards 2012 final, which is taking place on Monday 24th September. There is an abundance of spectacular talent on this year’s shortlist, perhaps a future So You Think You’re Funny winner or two! Celebrating female comedy and the female presence in comedy is what Funny Women is all about and this year’s Fringe has proven that female comedy has a rightful place in comedy that is most definitely here to stay!
