Standing in the queue for Susan Calman’s fifth sell out show I was surrounded by middle class, middle aged gangs with a handful of lesbians thrown in for good mix. There was a lot of well-mannered excitement in anticipation for the show. The audience demographic can
mainly be put down to Calman’s great work on Radio 4…and that’s just the lesbians.
Personally, Calman is one of my favourite people to follow on Twitter. Daily tweets about her three cats (who have theme tunes don’t you know?) meant that it was inevitable they would feature heavily in her routine. Calman’s quirky lifestyle of dressing up her feline friends
means that her intellectual, political, Radio 4 humour is partnered with oddball absurdity and this serves for a hilarious marriage of styles.
Talking of marriage, this is the focus of the show. With great wit Calman pulls apart the differences between gay marriage and civil partnership. Susan has found someone who wants to marry her, despite her hilarious list of reasons why nobody should want to. Gay marriage is a topic she feels passionate about, even getting teary and emotional at the end of her performance. Calman is so personable that the whole audience felt for her and she was met with a well-deserved rapturous applause.
The pint sized Glaswegian is a natural comedian, she holds fantastic eye contact with the audience and her facial expressions serve as the punch line on many occasions. This show guarantees a fantastic atmosphere, loads of laughs and even a free t-shirt (if you’re lucky!)
