This July, Funny Women is coming to Greater Manchester to celebrate the brightest emerging talent in female comedy and see what the North West has to offer!
As a northerner, I am extremely excited about the launch of the very first Greater Manchester Fringe Festival that will see nine of Salford and Manchester’s premier performance venues play host to some of the best emerging talents across the arts, including comedy!
Now, if you are unfamiliar with the capital of the North and its surrounding cities, allow me to educate you somewhat on the politics. Greater Manchester is separate from Manchester. There is a reason why there are two football teams and why one plays in a slightly sickening (my apologies to the Gallagher brothers) blue and the other in a majestic, devil red (United, United!)
Having a proud Salfordian for a mother means that I am all too aware of the wrath that can occur for mistakenly identifying a Salfordian as a Mancunian and vice versa! However, where football and pride can divide cities, comedy and entertainment unites them, and Funny Women are ecstatic to be playing a part!
Tuesday 10th July will see us hosting a Stand Up to Stand Out introductory workshop at The King’s Arms in Salford as part of the Greater Manchester Fringe Festival. This workshop reveals how to access the techniques of stand up comedy and demonstrates why humour can be hugely empowering for women. It is also a great outlet for developing self-confidence and communication skills!
And, because we enjoy our stays in the land up North so much, we are proud to be hosting one of our semi-finals of the Funny Women Awards 2012 at The Lowry, Salford Quays the very next evening on Wednesday 11th July! There will be 10 phenomenal acts performing on the night, each competing for a coveted place in the Funny Women Awards Final 2012!
Manchester and Greater Manchester are fabulous places that are alive with a certain atmosphere that cannot be recreated elsewhere, making the Greater Manchester Fringe and our event at the wonderful waterside destination, The Lowry, the places to be pre-Edinburgh!!
Make sure you check out the Greater Manchester Fringe Festival HERE for tickets and information about their other brilliant events!
