We’re coming to Brighton this Saturday with the Funny Women Awards and really looking forward to seeing what the sea air blows our way!

Three of our past winners live, have lived or retain strong connections with the town and we just wonder if there are special funny hormones in the water!

Zoe Lyons swept to victory in 2004 and has gone on to become one of the most sought after women comics on the circuit.  She remains close to her roots and runs Bent Double,  her own very successful comedy night at Komedia, , once a month and gigs all over the UK.   Zoe has made several television appearances including the Michael McIntyre Roadshow.

Miss London was brought up in Brighton and still has lots of family there to visit.  London won the Funny Women Awards in 2009 and hasn’t looked back.  She signed to a big agent and got snapped up by CBBC as a presenter.  She is soon to appear in a new BBC comedy, ‘All Over the Place’.

Our current title holder, Lara A King, also hails from Brighton, although she’s no longer a full time resident.  Lara’s seaside ‘home’ is a much loved beach hut and she splits her time between this and North London.

We first came across Lara as part of the Short and Girlie Show, the brilliant all female improv group with whom we work very closely.  Ali Adolph and the gang are regulars at our monthly Brighton Nights shows at Komedia – our next show takes place on Sunday 6th May as part of the Brighton Fringe – and Ali will be hosting the Awards heat at the Caroline of Brunswick this Saturday.

Our commitment to the Brighton comedy scene spans 10 years as we’ve held a heat for the Funny Women Awards since we launched the competition in 2003.  Julie Jepson was a finalist in 2006 and now books our regular Brighton Nights shows – so we know that there is provenance when it comes to new female comics.

If you would like to take part in the Brighton Heat of the 2012 Funny Women Awards, this coming Saturday 28th April, please register now or email awards_2012@funnywomen.com for more information.

Review: The Glitter Challenge at the Comedy Store London

Jaz Ampaw Farr may have been the one to announce that she had “Truth Tourettes” during the Funny Women Glitter Challenge at the Comedy Store last week.
