The Musical Comedy Awards is back! Now in its fourth year, the MCA has grown in stature to become an annual fixture in the comedy calendar and the best place to see the UK's finest up and coming musical comedians alongside some of the best established acts of the genre on the circuit.
Over the years the MCA have provided a launch pad to some superstar musical acts like Frisky and Mannish (2009 Finalists), Abandoman (2010 winners) and Jay Foreman (Best Newcomer 2009 and now touring with Dave Gorman) and created a thriving independent platform to celebrate the art form that is musical comedy. The competition has also played host to stars of the genre such as Mitch Benn, David O' Doherty, Bo Burnham and many more. This summer also saw the first German MCA, with a sold out Final at a 400 seater theatre in Berlin (ufaFabrik). There are also plans afoot to launch an MCA in other countries too.
The MCA want to encourage more female performers so to enter this year's competition, simply upload a video of your musical comedy material HERE before 11th December 2011 for your chance at the prizes.
A panel of judges including Funny Women’s executive producer, Lynne Parker, will select their favourite 40 acts to compete in heats at the Wilmington Arms London, from January through to March 2012, with the final five acts competing for the musical comedy crown at the Bloomsbury Theatre on 7th April 2012. The winner will receive £500, with the Best Newcomer (sponsored by WeGotTickets) winning £200.
Last year's Best Newcomer was Daisy D'Agostini, who's quirky songs reflecting on the woes of being a modern woman charmed and amused the judges. Read about her HERE.
All competing acts will also potentially have the opportunity to perform at MCA Showcases in London, Edinburgh, or on the MCA Uni tour, co-organised by the agency Red 24 Management.
