Abi Roberts Takes You Up the Aisle begins with a joyful rendition of ‘Chapel of Love’ which by the end had the entire audience clapping and singing. This sets the tone; A show about weddings, divorce, sexual addiction, and Margaret Thatcher.
Before taking you up the aisle, Abi takes you through her disastrous first marriage and the subsequent fallout. Despite the potentially heavy subject matter, she retains a sense of bemused detachment filled with relatable observations rather than any bitterness or resentment.
Anecdotes were interspersed with stunning musical centrepieces – some, like ‘Every Girl Needs a Gay Best Friend’ were both, as the saying goes, funny and true. But many others were jazz standards sang with great heart and emotion – a refreshing change to hear songs sung with earnest rather than ironic detachment.
It was a joyful, energetic and extremely likeable performance, and, I think it’s fair to presume, one woman’s plan to get the best possible value out of her wedding dress.
