We're always excited here in the Funny Women office when there's news of of comedy legend coming to London. Plus playing at our favourite venue, the Leicester Square Theatre for five nights. The brilliant Rita Rudner is bringing her one woman show to London in June and July 2011 for the first time in more than 15 years and fans of female comedy should make a date to see her.
In a career spanning 40 years, Rita has established herself as one of America’s top comedians and a New York Times best-selling author, as well as an award-winning television personality, screenwriter, playwright, Broadway dancer and actress.
She is now firmly ensconced in Las Vegas at The Venetian. Since opening in 2000, Rita’s one woman show has sold over one million tickets and grossed more than $70m to make her Sin City’s most successful female comedian, with the longest-running solo show in Vegas history. She has been voted ‘Best Comedian in Las Vegas’ nine years in a row.
One of the most well respected comedians in the business, with the perfect combination of conversational dry wit and expert timing, mixed with her self-deprecating signature style, Rudner is known for her epigrammatic one-liners and sharp, hilarious anecdotes about everyday life. The only four-letter words the audience will hear are ‘shop’, ‘shoe’ and ‘cook’!
Rudner’s area of interest is human behaviour; particularly how men and women relate to each other. She doesn't touch politics. She rarely makes a pop reference. She's interested in jokes that possess an identifying resonance and will stand the test of time. However, don't make the mistake of thinking her comedy is mild. There's a dagger concealed beneath the velvet.
Rita says: “I haven't been to London forever. The last time I was there, Prince William had hair. I'm really looking forward to seeing all my English friends, especially the ones who owe me money.”
